If you would like a hot meal (choice of BBQ pulled pork sandwich, pork bap with apple sauce and stuffing or a Californian veggie burger) its £7 per person but please order by 16th September in the Library. Moss Foley is our quiz master. Come along and show off your general knowledge (or learn something new!).
A quiz night at Henley Primary School Hall raised funds for the Library and the proposed CAB outreach clinic. The event was reported by one of the library’s youngest supporters, Sophie Cox, who attended with her mother and as well as being published on this site, her account has also been published in Henley News Online. Here is Sophie’s report:
Henley Community Library had its second Quiz Night on Monday 29th April in Henley Primary School Hall. For £2.00 per person, teams of 3-4 people competed for prizes for the highest score and Best Team Name. You could bring your own drinks, and as soon as you walked through the door you were warmly welcomed by Margaret!
Seven teams competed: The Charming Companions, Witty Wawens, Lit Chicks, From The Farr Side, Hope Over Experience, The Blanks and The Old Contemptibles. Play started at 7:30pm with the TV Times quiz. After every round teams swapped answer sheets for marking. Five quiz rounds rushed by before we had a break: TV Times; Where on Earth…? ; the Link round; Science and Nature, Music.
To make sure no one had time to be bored, sheets showing different pictures and asking different details about each one were given out just before round 1. Who or what did it show? Who created it? You had to squeeze your answers into the time between rounds 1 and 5. For the music round, there were different types of music played and again you had to guess different things about them: song titles, the names of performers or composers, and sometimes the music’s background – such as film or opera, depending on the cue on the answer sheet.
In the break, there was a snack bar serving cake, pizza, sausage rolls, crisps and salads plus coffee, juice and tea, for a donation. More rounds followed: Food Glorious Food, Literature, Film and General Knowledge. While the scores were totalled, the raffle provided some wonderful prizes: keep-fit equipment, a slow-cooker, bottles of wine, chocolates, pots of flowers, spa toiletries as well as restaurant, beauty and merchandise vouchers. Merchants in Henley and Wootton Wawen were very generous in their support. The Library will thank them on its website.
The Charming Companions reviewed the evening: “Tonight is good fun, though some of the questions should be made easier. But there is a nice variety of snacks available, and thank you for an enjoyable evening!”
Congratulations to The Blanks, who won the Quiz prize of wine and chocolates. There was a tie for Best Team Name: From The Farr Side and The Lit Chicks took away a team bottle each. A big thank you to all of the helpers of The Henley Community Library, Moss for being an excellent host, Elaine for keeping the scoreboard and everyone who came to join in the quiz for a fun and successful night!
Sophie Cox reporting
Following on from the success of our first quiz night in January, we are pleased to announce the return of this event. The second Henley Community Library Quiz Night fundraiser will be held on MONDAY 29 APRIL 2013. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the Quiz will kick off at 7:30 p.m. As in January, the venue will be HENLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL HALL, Arden Road, Henley in Arden. In addition to the quiz there will be a LUCKY DRAW, PRIZES FOR BEST TEAM NAME and HIGHEST QUIZ SCORES. The entry cost is £2 per person with a team size of 4. Please bring your own bottle, other refreshments will be available for a donation.
The event is for the benefit of Henley Community Library and the proposed Citizens’ Advice Bureau clinics at the Library. This latest project is a proposal to hold fortnightly Citizens’ Advice Bureau clinics for the benefit of local residents in the Library. We have been notified that we will receive a grant to fund an outreach worker for a year, and now await a decision by the CAB on whether the clinic will go forward. One of CAB’s biggest concerns in setting up an outreach clinic is evidence that it can be sustained. Community support in the form of a vigorous response to grassroots fundraising can only help.
You can regeister and pay your Quiz Night fees at the Henley Community Library desk or you can download a pdf registration form from this website at Quiz Night Registration Form, simply print, fill it out, and post to Henley Community Library, Hollyhocks, Mayswood Rd, Wootton Wawen, H-in-A, B956AX or return it to the Library. Henley Community Library’s First Quiz Night on 14 January put 7 teams through their paces with Quizmaster Moss Foley. The teams competed at Henley Primary School hall in rounds for music, celebrity photos, fine arts, cinema, sports, current affairs and of course books. A big thank you to assistant head Elaine Field was who was on hand to welcome everyone and ensure that all went well.
Winning teams enjoyed a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates or biscuits. The Best Team Name was ‘Readers of the Lost Ark’. A lucky draw and a raffle sent more winners home with wine, gift vouchers, biscuits, chocolates, soft toys, potted flowers and gadgets. Thanks to the cornish pasties, generously given by Roddy and Julia at Yew Tree Farm Shop, as well as cakes, artisanal bread from Knead It, and vegetarian snacks, everyone ate well. The Second Quiz Night will be in April, details to be announced.
